For help on running ENGLISH RECALL print the HELP.TXT file. For more
information on ENGLISH RECALL print the README.TXT file. To order
additional Vocabulary Files or TOTAL RECALL print the ORDER.TXT file and
use it as a blank order form.
1. System Requirements
=========================
To run ENGLISH RECALL all you need is an IBM compatible computer, 512K of
memory, 1 or 2 floppy drives (hard disk recommended but not necessary),
any kind of monitor or video card, and MS-DOS 2.0 or later.
1) (You may not need to perform this first step unless you wish to
optimize your system performance). You should have a file called
CONFIG.SYS in your top-level directory (or on the system disk from
which you boot-up if you don't have a hard drive). Edit the file
CONFIG.SYS and add the following two statements to it:
FILES=20
BUFFERS=8
If you don't have a CONFIG.SYS file in your top-level directory,
copy the one included with the ENGLISH RECALL disk.
2) If you have a CGA monitor, you will have "snow" on your screen unless
you include the following statement in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file:
SET CLIPPER= S1; (Type exactly as shown).
3) Make sure that the file COMMAND.COM is in the DOS path or in the top
directory.
4) If you use memory resident programs or TSRs you may have problems
running ENGLISH RECALL due to its large memory requirements or other
conflicts. If so, do not load any memory resident programs at
boot-up.
2. Users With a Hard Disk Drive
==================================
1) Create a working directory, get into that directory, and copy all
ENGLISH RECALL files from the distribution disk to that directory as
follows:
C:
CD\
MD ENGLISH
CD ENGLISH
COPY A:*.*
2) Run the program by typing:
ER
Note: The GO TO DOS option will not work unless you have a system disk
in the default path.
3. Users With One 3.5" Disk Drive (No Hard Disk)
===================================================
Copy the contents of the distribution disk to a working disk and then
do your work entirely from that disk without any further disk swapping.
1) Place the original distribution (source) disk in drive A: (or B:).
2) Type the following:
DISKCOPY A:
3) Swap your working (destination) disk as instructed.
4. Users With 1 HD 5.25" Disk Drive (No Hard Disk)
=====================================================
Follow the same instructions as for 1.3 above.
5. Users With One 360K (DD) 5.25" Drive (No Hard Disk)
=========================================================
Load the program from one disk and then use another disk to hold your
Subject Files.
1) Make a working copy of the distribution disk as in 1.3 above.
2) Run the program by typing:
ER
3) Insert the disk that will hold your Subject Files into the drive.
4) From the CUSTOMIZE menu define your path as A: (or B:).
6. Users With 2 Floppy Disk Drives (No Hard Disk)
====================================================
Use drive A: to hold the main program ER.EXE and to use drive B: to
hold your VOCABULARY FILES.
1) Copy ER.EXE to a system disk. (This is necessary in order for
the GO TO DOS option to work). To create a system disk, format a
disk with:
FORMAT A:/S
2) Copy ER.EXE to the newly created disk.
3) Insert the new disk into drive A: and start to run by typing:
A:\ER
4) Insert a blank formatted disk into drive B:
5) Whenever the program asks you for a Path, type
B:
7. Running the Program
=========================
1) Run the program by typing:
ER
2) From here on everything is menu-driven and self-explanatory. Make
menu selections by a) using arrow keys to move highlight bar to
choice and pressing RETURN or b) pressing the first letter of desired
choice.
3) You can customize the colors and the sound from the CUSTOMIZE MENU.
Your new set-up will be saved automatically to disk.
Note:
-----
The following files must be in the same directory as the main ENGLISH
RECALL program (ER.EXE) that you run or load from:
TEST.LOG
SETUPER.MEM
README.TXT
HELP.TXT
INSTALL.TXT
SUBJECTS.TXT
[Esc] means to press the key marked "Esc". This will usually quit
or exit whatever you are doing at the time.
[^W] means press the key marked "Ctrl" together with the letter W.
